Placement
Placement is an important step in your academic journey and should be completed prior to your first advising appointment.

What is Placement and Why Does it Matter?
Placement refers to the process students go through to demonstrate their current understanding of subjects such as Math, English, and Reading, and is used to determine the right starting point for your college courses, ensuring you begin at a level that matches your skills—so you’re challenged without being overwhelmed. Accurate placement saves time, money, and keeps you on track for graduation. Your placement may be based on test scores, high school grades, or other measures.
Unsure if Placement is Required for You?

Ways to Satisfy Placement
There are many ways to satisfy placement requirements, including through ACT or SAT scores, high school grades, prior college courses, or by taking a free placement assessment in the JCCC Testing Center.
Visit the Prerequisites and Placement webpage for specific information on what satisfies these requirements as well as instructions for submitting transcripts or test scores.
When Should I Complete Placement?
If you need to complete placement requirements, you should do this before your first advising meeting. This allows us to make class recommendations based on where you placed. Without this information, we will not be able to help you plan your classes.
This means that high school or college transcripts, ACT or SAT test scores, and/or placement tests taken in the JCCC Testing Center (depending on which of these options satisfies your requirements) will need to be submitted and reviewed prior to your meeting.
Need to Take a Placement Assessment?
Take the first step towards preparing for advising and enrollment by scheduling your placement assessment now. Study materials for the Math, Reading, Writing, and ESL placement assessments are available on the testing services webpage.
