Full-Time vs. Part-Time Status

Your enrollment status depends on how many credit hours you take that semester. Full-time students usually finish their degrees faster and may qualify for more financial aid, while part-time students often take fewer classes to balance work or other responsibilities. The key is to pick the right number of classes for your situation. A Success Coach or Counselor can help you decide on the right number of classes.

Fall and Spring semesters:

  • 12 credit hours or more is full-time.
  • 11 credit hours or less is part-time.
  • Winter session classes run mid-December to mid-January and count towards the fall semester.

Summer semester:

  • 6 credit hours or more is full-time.
  • 5 credit hours or less is part-time.

What is the Maximum Number of Hours You can Take Each Semester?

Students can take up to 18 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and up to 9 credit hours in the summer without special permission. These limits exist to help you manage your workload and maintain academic success. If you want to enroll in more than these limits, you’ll need to speak with a Counselor to request approval.

How Much Time Should You Plan to Study?

A good rule of thumb is to plan about two hours of study time for every credit hour you take. For example, if you’re enrolled in 12 credit hours, you should expect to spend around 24 hours each week studying outside of class. This helps you stay on top of assignments, prepare for exams, and fully understand the material.
